Various historic records show that people kept chickens as far back as 3000 years ago, and India is believed to be the pioneering country. Later, chicken keeping extended to China and the Middle East. It was not food that people held chickens for, but cockfighting. In the West cockfighting throve until the end of the 17th century. Then it was banned and replaced by poultry exhibitions.
Chickens - General Description
The ancestor of the modern chicken is the Red Jungle Fowl (Gallus bankiva or Gallus gallus), which can still be found in the wild. All chickens have one thing in common. They have skinny growths on the head (combs) and under the chin (wattles). These features characterize sex, and they are less observable in females.
Domestic chickens have completely lost the ability to fly. Light skeleton is but the only sign of their long gone ability to fly. All they can do is flap their wings to boost a jump onto a fence or a perch. Chickens are covered with feathers and they have scarce rudimentary hairs underneath. Chickens have beaks and straight scaly and toed legs. Cocks have spurs on the rear bottom part of the legs. They do not have teeth, and therefore, rough food gets ground in their gizzards.
Chickens have a short life span. Hens achieve puberty and start laying eggs at six months of age. After 18-20 months they are no longer economically productive and are replaced with young broods. Some birds can live 10-12 years.
After a couple of days it is impossible to distinguish between males and females. It is also unsuitable to judge by their behavior. If a chick seems a little bit more cocky and aggressive, it does not tell the whole story about its sex. Chickens can be sex classified only after several weeks following birth.
