Various historic records show that people kept chickens as far back as 3000 years ago, and India is believed to be the pioneering country. Later, chicken keeping extended to China and the Middle East. It was not food that people held chickens for, but cockfighting. In the West cockfighting throve until the end of the 17th century.
Chickens’ plumage varies in accordance with the breed. They range in color from white and gray to red and iridescent green-tinted black.
When buying chickens, make sure you buy them from an experienced and qualified keeper. It is important that they have been sexed properly. It is always more reliable and relevant to buy just born chickens or to buy a hen just about to lay eggs.
Chickens are divided into groups according to the geography of a breed and physical characteristics. According to the geographical range they are divided into classes. There are 12 classes of chickens, and those are: English, American, Continental, Hamburg, Asiatic, Polish, Mediterranean, French, Oriental, Miscellaneous, Bantams and Game class.
